Education Issues

- Mark and his family advocate and support a strong, appropriate, accountable and well-managed public education system. Mark's work and experience with the Hopkins, Minnesota, School District 0270 is a testament to his willingness to help build better public education institutions.

- Mark's daughter, Alexandra, a graduate of Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, was a teacher in the Denver Public School System for  two years . She taught in a challenged school as part of AmeriCorps' Teach for America (TFA) program. She is an enthusiastic, passionate and dedicated supporter of public education, and all education in general. She subsequently worked for Arnie Dumcan, Secretary of The United States Department of Education in Washington, D.C., as Confidential Assistant to Carmel Martin, Undersecretary of Education for Planning, Evaluation and Policy Development (U.S Department of Education- Senior Staff Biographies: Carmel Martin) . She is currently working for a national non-profit organization developing and funding advanced leadership training programs for school principals and asssistant principals.

-The early Broin family was one of the major financial contributors to the founding of St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota. The family has continued their support, over the years, of St. Olaf and of Carlton College, also located in Northfield.

Our Schools Should be Focused on the Following Core Objectives:

- Quality, Value and Service delivered in clean, well maintained, safe and secure surroundings

- Respect for prudent management of program offerings and the need for financial accountability

- Open, honest, timely, regular and understandable communication with all stakeholders

- An unwavering focus on students, and on measurable or demonstratable improvement in student performance

- A commitment to developing more than adequate proficiency in the basic fundamentals necessary for every student's success in our society: reading and comprehension; written and oral communication; and an understanding of basic mathematics and finance

- Adaptability to necessary, sensible and appropriate changes in the delivery of education programs on the public's behalf

- An understanding and respect for federal, state and local capacity to fund public education, and the consequent necessity to properly identify, plan for and focus upon appropriate priorities
